In 1978, Rosario Messina founded a company in Meda in the Brianza with a stated goal: to create a new sleep culture. That same year, Nathalie came onto the market – according to Flou, the first modern upholstered textile bed with a fully removable cover, designed by Vico Magistretti. We are Flou's exclusive distributor in Switzerland and show the collection in our showroom at Nüschelerstrasse 30 in Zurich.

Nathalie: a bed in the design pantheon
At the XXVI Compasso d'Oro in 2020, the ADI honoured objects "alla carriera" for the first time in the history of Italy's most important design award – recognising a product's lifetime achievement. Alongside the Arco lamp and the Sacco beanbag, the third object was Nathalie by Vico Magistretti for Flou. The trade press calls Nathalie the forebear of the modern fabric bed – the first bed to treat bed, mattress and bedding as a single project. The official award citation honours the "typological innovation in the textile-bed sector": functionality and poetry in one piece of furniture.
From Meda to bedrooms around the world
Flou remains headquartered in Meda in the Brianza, the heartland of the Italian furniture industry, and is run by the founder's three children. What began as a textile-bed pioneer has grown into a complete sleep range: beds with removable covers, bed linen, duvets and pillows, plus sofas and transformable beds – all made to a Made in Italy standard. Alongside Nathalie, the icons include Tadao (Vico Magistretti, 1993), which exposes the otherwise hidden wooden slats and carries them, uninterrupted, up into the headboard, and the storage bed Amal by Carlo Colombo, with a storage compartment and a cover removable in fabric or leather.

What sets Flou apart is its way of thinking in systems: bed frames with fully removable, interchangeable covers, plus three base variants – from the multi-layer beech slatted frame with adjustable lumbar firmness, through the storage base, to motorised adjustment (manufacturer specifications). Our range carries Flou beds for the slatted-frame line with spring mattresses – the alternative to box spring and to the multi-layer DUXIANA system. Trying the beds in person shows which of the three systems suits you.
